On the wall of our classroom is a large alphabet chart. It shows the upper and lower case formation of each letter and pictures that represent the sounds each letter makes. For example, the letter K has a picture of a kite, and the letter C shows pictures of a cat and a circle to represent the different sounds the letter makes. Selected students (typically those who are lower readers and writers) also have a smaller copy of this chart in their writing folders, so that they can use it when writing. The chart is extremely helpful for students when they are spelling and trying to identify all the sounds they hear in a word. It is especially helpful for letters that have multiple sounds as it is a goal in first grade to be able to differentiate the short and long vowel sounds.
