Grammar

In our morning message today we deliberately left out some important punctuation. Our focus was on adding end punctuation and capitalizing the beginning of sentences. Students identified what the problem areas were, then we went through and edited as a group. This was our first formal introduction to end punctuation and capitalization (although they do teach this in kindergarten). We teach one or two formal lessons on editing every month, but try to incorporate some aspect of literacy every day in the morning message. We are working on identifying where one thought ends and the other starts. This seems to be difficult for first graders, and we will need to continue to practice identifying where sentences begin and end.
