During many days in Reading Workshop, after a period of independent reading time, students engage in partner reading. Students read with a partner who is at the same, or similar, reading level. They read the same book together, sometimes in choral reading, echo reading, or by taking turns (one student reads a page, and the other student reads the next page). Partner reading allows students to coach one another, and work together on similar skills. It offers another interactive way to read beyond just silent, independent reading. Often, I teach into similar reading strategies for partners as we do for individual reading, which allows students to relearn the same concept, and then apply it in a new context. My students love to partner read!
