I began doing some "Hearing and Recording Sounds in Words" assessments. I chose students who scored low in their beginning of the year spelling test and those who are also reading below grade level. I found that my lowest student is scoring a 5 on a stanime scale which is technically concerned an average score and should be able to keep up with grade level. However, in our school and classroom, he is significantly behind the rest of the class. I'm assuming this means that our standards are higher than typical classrooms in the United States. I noticed that this student, in particular, rushed through his work and substituted words due to not listening carefully. He also needs to work on letter formation and spacing. He was able to identify most sounds but also added other letters/sounds into words. For example, this student spelled going as “gowking”. I will continue to assess this student and the other students I give this assessment to every trimester to see if they have improved after interventions are implemented.
