Phonics Workshop

Today in Phonics Workshop we looked again at blends and digraphs. We’ve studied these before so students are already quite familiar with them, however, today we looked at them from the context of using blends and digraphs to build new words. We’ve been studying “power words”—words that have common rimes and adding blends or digraphs to the beginning to make more words. Students first applied this idea to specific “power words” and blends to create new words. Then, as a class, we read a poem together (which also promotes fluency in reading) and identified all the different blends and digraphs we found in the words. The students were really excited to notice all the blends and digraphs and together we counted 28! We’ll continue noticing these in our daily interaction with reading and writing.
