Shared Reading

Today my co-teacher did shared reading with a brand new book with our first graders. Before we read the book, she covered up some words with post-it notes. During the lesson, as we read, students came upon the covered up words, and we practiced using our word solving strategies. Strategies that they used included checking the picture, getting their mouths ready to say the word, and guessing what would make sense and then checking to see if it looks right. Shared reading allows for modeling strategies and is another way to formatively assess students.
