In our classroom, we have a very large poster of vowels and their basic vowel sounds. It's a simple poster with the vowels down the middle, and long vowels sounds on the left and short vowel sounds on the right. Instead of showing it in a word, each vowel sound is represented by a picture, for example, the short vowel sound for ‘e' has a picture of an egg. During the first week of phonics instruction, we taught the different short and long vowel sounds and then hung the poster up. We teach our students to use anchor charts and posters in the room to be independent in their writing, so it is hanging out in our writing center, next to the word wall, so that students can reference it while they write. Also, we have smaller versions that we can put in each student's writing folder so that it's easily accessible.
