Today, I worked with the lowest reader in my class with Elkonin boxes. I sorted the cards into categories, and I focused on CVC words with this student. When we sat down together, I showed her the picture and told her what it was. She had manipulatives (counter chips) and had to slide a chip into the box for every segmented sound she heard. At first, I segmented the sounds, and she put a chip in the box for each sound. After a bit, she began to segment the sounds herself and do the chips. At one point, she recognized the pattern and began to put a different color chip in for the vowel sound in the middle. At the end of our time together, I asked the student to write the spelling in the boxes rather than put the chips in. She recalled the pattern and used all she knew about the sounds of letters to spell the CVC words. This activity served as a formative assessment of her knowledge of sounds and CVS words.
