Interactive Read Aloud

I have noticed recently that students have had trouble with text-to-self comprehension questions. To support this element of reading comprehension, I specifically focused on this idea during an interactive read aloud. As I read the book "Odd Velvet", I stopped periodically to ask comprehension questions such as, "have you ever felt this way?" and "what does this part remind you of?" and "is this similar or different to your life?". During an interactive read aloud I can model the type of thinking that a reader does when reading. I am also able to formatively assess how their understanding improves from the beginning to the end of the lesson.
