Our word wall is an entire whiteboard in our classroom. We build the wall together through our phonics program. The first thing to go on the wall is the students' names. We practice phonics activities with the names, and as we finish each activity, we place the names on the board. Next, we include some kindergarten sight words for a review, and then build the rest of the wall as we talk about different concepts. For example, we recently added words that have short ‘o' sounds. Next week, we'll add high-frequency words for the unit that have the "magic e" at the end of a word. The word wall gets full, and we explicitly teach students to reference it during their writing. We make sure to have the students become familiar with the words on the wall before we place them there so that they know what words they can reference as they write.
